Thimerosal and vaccines

As I dig for more information about thimerosal and vaccinations, I like to check on sources of information. The topic of vaccination is so controversial that it is hard to get the facts. It is like a battle of the brains. One side brings all their evidence, the opposing side brings theirs and the war is on. For the article that I looked at yesterday by Geier et al, I wanted to look at some of the research that they were quoting. What I am most concerned with as a doctor, is what mercury does in the body. Every article I find demonstrates that thimerosal is associated with cell death, toxicity, neuronal insult and glutathione depletion(most prominent internal antioxidant in the body). If we know that even small amounts of mercury is harmful to the body, then why would we want to inject it into our cells? Why would we urge pregnant women to get a shot containing thimerosal that could damage her unborn baby? Does thalidomide ring a bell for anyone?
