Autistic Disorders and Thimerosal (ethyl-mercury)

Reports of autism cases per 1,000 children gre...

As a chiropractor, I am always looking up information about topics that I find interesting.  I stumbled across this You Tube video and wanted to check the facts myself.  This video is describing that the Chief of the CDC (Centers of Disease Control) admitted that vaccines can trigger autism in a certain percentage of the population.  This was already information that I had studied, but I wanted some more current research.  I came across this article on mitochondrial dysfunction and thought it did a great job describing the link between Autistic disorders and mercury exposure.

This article by Geier et al. tested the effects of thimerosal (ethylmercurithiosalicylic acid), aluminum sulfate octadecahydrate (aluminium sulfate), Hg(II) chloride Pb(II) [lead] acetate trihydrate, and MeHg(II)[methylmercury] hydroxide on in vitro on different cell types in order to determine mitochondrial dysfunction.  The cell types tested were human neruoblastoma, astrocytoma and fetal cells.  The study was determining if there were any similarities between the damage associated on the cell types due to the thimerosal or thimerosal like compounds and the cellular findings that were observed in Autistic Disorders (AD).

Out of all the tested compounds, thimerosal had the most significant results. The rest of the compounds in order of most significant to least significant was thimerosal,  then Hg chloride, then Lead acetate, then aluminum sulfate.    The cells that were most affected from most to least: human fetal cells, human neuroblastoma cells, and human astrocytoma cells.

This study suggests that thimerosal can induce mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired oxidative-reduction which are mechanisms for neuronal cell damage.  The oxidative stress increases the number of free radicals in the body (see these diseases associated with oxidative stress).  The typical signs associated with the effects of thimerosal on cells is also consistent with the presentation of Autistic Disorders. Overall, nanomolar concentrations of thimerosal was toxic to cells in the body that have been linked with Autism according to the authors.

According to the CDC 2010, vaccinations that may contain thimerosal include:DTaP, DtaP-Hib, DT, Td, Hib, Influenza, Japanese encephalitis, Meningococcal, Rabies, and some other single dose vaccines, “consult product monographs and labeling for details”.  To find a list of vaccines that still use thimerosal, visit this CDC link

When I visited was trying to look up adverse events or side effects of vaccinations, I came across a table from VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) and most of the adverse events of the vaccinations in the table directed me to see the manufacturer’s package insert.  Of the events described in the table: anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock, encephalopathy or encephalitis, death, chronic arthritis, brachial neuritis, thrombocytopenic purpura, measles, polio, were all listed as adverse reactions under different vaccines.

My goal is not to tell anyone what they should or should not do, but my intention is to get people to do research on the topic of vaccination so that the decision made is an educated one.
